Reviews of eReading on Smartphones and Phablets

HTC One Smartphone Reviewed

HTC has one of the best smartphones available to those looking to enjoy eReading on their phone.  The phone is shown in the photograph at right and features a 4.7 inch screen.

The HTC One is a strong contender among smartphones, with an exceptionally powerful 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor equipped with 2GB of RAM.

The result is a phone that's lightning fast: Apps load instantly, Web browsing is smooth and snappy (even with multiple tabs open) and swiping between home screen panels is swift and lag-free.

Its size is  5.4 x 2.7 and is only 0.37 in. thick.  It weighs 5 oz.

The screen density of its 1080p LCD display is 468 pixels per inch, and is rated by reviewers as gorgeous with brilliant colors and sharp detail that makes images and text pop with clarity.  Even in bright sunlight, the One's Gorilla Glass 2-protected screen remains perfectly visible.

Audio is also said by reviewers to be the best audio ever heard from a smartphone. Music played through the One sounds full and clear and lacks the tinny, muted quality so many smartphone speakers possess.

Its battery life is excellent.  It comes with a 2300mAh non-removable battery.  The reviewer from PCWorld stated: “On days with heavier use, though -- 30 minutes of video streaming, an hour of audio streaming and a couple hours of scattered Web browsing and social media activity, for example -- I started seeing low battery warnings toward the end of the evening.”

High speed connectivity through AT&T includeds AT&T’s LTE towers as well as HSPA+, which T-Mobile offers.  This combination serves the user well, since the AT&T LTE signals are limited, and the HSPA+ is often as fast or faster than LTE.

Voice call quality is rated loud and clear.  Those being called also reported they could hear the voice without crackling or distortion.

It is convenient that the HTC One also has NFC (Near-field communication) so files can be immediately transferred between another NFC-equipped device by simply bumping the devies together.  Pictures and moves can be quickly transferred between phones or tablets in this way.

Cameras are front and back, and the reviewers extolled the pictures taken with the back facing camera.  Although low in pixel count, HTC uses a special technology that allows additional brightness with the smaller pixels used on the screen.

The bottom line:  “The HTC is one of the best made smartphones you can but today.  The phone has high-quality hardware and a beautiful premium build.  It has a stunning 1080p display, great-sounding stereo speakers, and a camera with outstanding low-light capabilities. . . It’s also one of the fastest devices around, with top-notch performance that won’t let you down."

This size screen is especially handy for eReading and at present it is exceeded by only a couple of other smartphones: the LG Optimus G Pro  and the Galaxy Note 2, both of which have 5.5 inch screens. (These will be reviewed soon.)
